“Northwest Airlines -THE FIRST 80 YEARS”
That’s the title of a new book about Northwest Airlines. The author is Geoff Jones, a freelance aviation journalist and photographer who regularly publishes articles on civil aviation topics in a number of magazines worldwide. Geoff spent a few days with us last fall researching the book. The History Centre volunteers were pleased to be able to assist him. He is a private pilot and flies his small four-seat Robin DR500 aircraft for recreation and vacations. He is a resident of the British Channel Island, Guernsey. This is his twelfth book. His previous most recently published book was ”Delta Air Lines – 75 Years of Airline Excellence”.
The new book (now in its lst printing) should be available in the History Centre Gift Shop by the time this newsletter is distributed. The new book can be purchased at the History Centre for $20.00 (we’ll pay the sales tax) or it can be ordered through our web site (www.NWAHistory.org). We will ship the book for you anywhere in the U.S., but must ask, if the book is to be shipped, for an additional $3.00 to cover shipping expenses.
One of Geoff’s most recent articles was a three-page spread about the NWA History Centre in the March, 2005 issue of Airliner World Magazine.
New Addition to Museum Exhibits
Many thanks to the efforts of Mike Corgiat; the History Centre has a great seven-foot DC-10 model now on display. Mike spent a good deal of time and talent in refurbishing the model. The company’s first DC-10 was actually ship #143, delivered from Douglas Nov. 10, 1972. It was the first of the dash 40 series and was equipped with the same Pratt-Whitney engine series that powered Northwest’s 747’s. The commonality of engines was specified to reduce spare inventory and as well enhance aircraft performance. While Northwest continues to operate some DC-10 aircraft, all of the series 40 aircraft have been retired.

Ray Dolney and Bob Mielke, both retired pilots, admiring the
recently acquired DC-10-40 model.
