Remember the 30th Anniversary

In October, 1956, Northwest Airlines flew one its original Ford Tri-Motor planes, which it operated through the early 1930s – Ship 8419 – on a nostalgic coast-to-coast flight to mark its 30 th anniversary. The crew included Capt. Leon S. “Deke” DeLong, Northwest’s senior pilot at the time, his “young Co-pilot Joseph Kimm, Flight Mechanic Walter Kollath and Stewardess (whoops, “Flight Attendant) Coral Yahr. The Ford Tri-Motor was advertised as the plane “with windows that open and close and complete lavatory facilities”. Ship 8419 was rented from Johnson Flying Service, Missoula, Montana, and was spiffed up with Northwest Airways markings by a volunteer group of employees at Northwest’s Holman Field systemwide overhaul base.

Thanks to History Centre Director Bob Johnson, who was aboard the western portion of the flight as a company PR representative, we have a large number of photos that he took while in flight and at intermediate stops.

This has been a very successful fund raising venture for the museum. Our volunteers are in the initial stage of development of a second edition. If anyone wishes to contribute a recipe or recipes please, write them on an index card or for that matter on any piece of paper and send it along to the History Centre. Please be sure to include your name so that proper recognition can be given. Recipes are needed for just about anything from soup and salads to desserts and everything between.
