History Centre Four Years Old:

Visitor From Near and Far: Our History Centre is now four years old. Our guests have come from near and

far – from 42 states and seven foreign countries. Each guest is asked to sign in, name and where from. Some neglect to provide this information, however, so it’s not possible to have a full count. Outside of Minnesota and Wisconsin, leading visitor states, in order, are Florida, Washington, California, Michigan and Arizona. A considerable number of visitors come from Alaska, too. Foreign guests include those from Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, India, Denmark, Germany and Norway.

Mrs. Jeanette Glick, Bloomington, Minnesota, was the History Centre’s first official guest when we opened October 9, 2002. She has returned several times. Second official guest was Charles W. Holman, nephew and namesake of Charles W. “Speed” Holman, Northwest’s first pilot and operations manager. Holman won national acclaim for his aerial feats. He was killed stunting at an Omaha air show in May 1931.

Several former Northwest presidents have been visitors, including Don Nyrop, Joe Lapensky, John Horn and Steve Rothmeier.

The Centre has many interesting exhibits. One that draws much comment is a framed, 20-by-96-inch full color montage of Northwest Flight Attendant Lady Sylvia Frances Townley-Peeler modeling 16 Flight Attendant uniforms dating back 39 years from Pacific Airlines, Air West, Republic and NWA. For researchers, the Centre has a complete collection of Northwest company publications (“houseorgans”) dating back before 1940. Annual reports and books about Northwest, too.

The History Centre is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment. Closed on holidays.
